Vanity Metric

What is Vanity Metric?
A number that looks impressive but does not predict listeners, revenue, or growth.
Vanity Metric explained
A vanity metric is a figure that rises without anything real changing underneath. Raw follower counts and total play counts are the usual examples in music, because both can be inflated cheaply and neither says anything about whether people listen. The useful counterparts are unique listeners, retention, repeat listeners across releases, saves, and conversion from a listen to a follow. The test is simple: if the number went up tenfold overnight, would anything about your career actually be different. When the honest answer is no, the metric is vanity.
Why Vanity Metric matters for independent artists
Understanding Vanity Metric helps you make better promotion decisions on SoundCloud and other streaming platforms. On Reposter Network, artists apply concepts like this every day when they trade real plays, likes and reposts with other musicians instead of buying fake engagement.
