OAuth Authorisation

Category: Technical

What is OAuth Authorisation?

A permission standard that lets a tool act on your account without ever receiving your password.

OAuth Authorisation explained

OAuth is how a legitimate tool connects to your SoundCloud account. You sign in on SoundCloud itself, approve a defined set of permissions, and the tool receives a revocable token instead of your password. Two things follow from this. First, any service that asks for your SoundCloud password directly should be refused, because it has no safe way to store it and you cannot withdraw access without changing the password everywhere. Second, access granted through OAuth can be reviewed and removed in your account settings at any time, which makes it worth checking occasionally to see which tools still hold a connection you no longer use.

Why OAuth Authorisation matters for independent artists

Understanding OAuth Authorisation helps you make better promotion decisions on SoundCloud and other streaming platforms. On Reposter Network, artists apply concepts like this every day when they trade real plays, likes and reposts with other musicians instead of buying fake engagement.
