What is Transcoding?
The conversion SoundCloud performs on an uploaded file to create the compressed streams listeners actually hear.
Transcoding explained
When you upload a track, SoundCloud does not stream your original file. It converts it into compressed formats sized for different connections and devices, which is why the audio a listener hears is never identical to the master you sent. The practical consequence is that you should upload the highest quality file allowed rather than a compressed MP3, because every conversion applied to an already compressed file adds artefacts that cannot be recovered. Loudness also matters: heavily limited masters lose more in conversion than masters with a little headroom left in them.
