Split Sheet
Category: Music Marketing
What is Split Sheet?
A split sheet documents how songwriting credits and royalties are divided among collaborators on a track.
Split Sheet explained
A split sheet is a written agreement specifying each contributor's percentage ownership of a song. It should include: song title, writer names and legal names, their PRO affiliations, percentage splits, publisher information (if any), and signatures. Splits should be agreed upon before release—disputes after a song becomes successful are messy and damage relationships. Default equal splits (50/50 for two writers) are common but not required; splits can reflect actual contribution levels. Beats, hooks, verses, melody, and lyrics can all factor into negotiations. Having split sheets for every collaboration protects everyone and prevents lost royalties.
Why Split Sheet matters for independent artists
Understanding Split Sheet helps you make better promotion decisions on SoundCloud and other streaming platforms. On Reposter Network, artists apply concepts like this every day when they trade real plays, likes and reposts with other musicians instead of buying fake engagement.
